Paying Homage in Song; Acknowledging What Comes Before

By Marc W. Polite

Good morning, everyone. A new week is upon us. It hit me this morning to raise the topic of paying homage. In this context, I want to talk about music.

For hip hop heads, the most recent collab that has everyone’s ear has to be “Soujourner” featuring J. Cole and Rapsody. This feature has to be one of the best this year, and both emcees are talking about real issues. The verse where Cole is talking about his life, and place in the rap game is refreshingly honest. If you have not checked that out, you should.

On the R&B side of the music game, you have the relatively new singer Ella Mai, giving her rendition to the Adina Howard song “T-shirt and panties” in the song “Own It”

While I prefer the original, it’s a solid check in on Ella Mai’s part. It’s good to hear that contemporary artists are acknowledging and respecting who comes before them. That is the best way to build up the culture.
