On Thursday, November 11, 2021 (7:30pm ET; please note the special start time), we will host an evening with Uwem Akpan, author of New York, My Village, which was just published this week (November 2nd).
Born in Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria, Uwem’s short stories and autobiographical pieces have appeared in the special editions of The New Yorker, Oprah magazine, and other publications. In his immigrant story, New York, My Village, Uwem writes about the city with the same promise and pain we saw in his New York Times best-seller Say You’re One of Them (2008) which was the 2009 Oprah Book Club selection. Say You’re One of Them also won the Commonwealth Prize (Africa Region), the Open Book Prize, and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award.
For this special evening, Akpan will be in conversation with best-selling novelist Donna Hill (who is also the fiction workshop leader at the Center for Black Literature).
We hope you’ll join us as we continue the John Oliver Killens Reading Series this month. Join the hundreds of Black Literature lovers who have attended our three previous (rather successful) events since September.
