Greetings my readers. New York City is typically thought of as a bastion of progression. However, when you look at it’s history, there’s much more to discern.
2019 is the 50th year anniversary of the student takeover of the City College of New York. Not many people realize that this institution of higher education used to be one that Black people rarely attended- in the middle of Harlem. The 1969 student takeover changed all of that, through the leadership of student activists like James Smalls, and the late Louis Reyes Rivera among many others. Their struggle paved the way for future generations of students.
Tomorrow’s event is the commemoration of that struggle, that often papered over part of Harlem history. This event is sponsored by the African American and Latino 1969 students.
The registration information is in the flyer above.
