Poet, author, and activist Amiri Baraka passed today at the age of 79. The writer who was one of the key figures in the Black Arts Movement transitioned today in Newark. Former poet laureate of New Jersey, the man formerly known as Leroi Jones will be remembered as a great individual. One who wrote political poems, and spoke freely in spite of consequences. Amiri Baraka’s body of work and influence will surely survive. May he rest in peace.
