Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch Passed this Friday At the age of 88. The three term mayor, who was in office from 1977 to 1989 has been memorialized over the past few days. While it is respectful to do so, considering the impact that this mayor made on New York City, it is important to ask if certain aspects of his legacy are being papered over.
Black New Yorkers remember Koch somewhat differently than what is being mentioned in some of the coverage. A particular point of variance was the closing of Sydenham hospital on his watch. If we must talk about the things that a politician has done during his terms, then let the whole record be discussed.
