Here at the Polite Society, we talk about social issues affecting the Black community and work to raise awareness of things that need to be discussed. It is equally important to acknowledge and support individuals who are moving in a positive direction, and taking steps to improve themselves and their community. I would like to take this opportunity to shine some light on a high achieving, college bound young woman. Allow me to introduce you to Ms. Nyia Marikka Gore of Snellville, Georgia.
A senior from South Gwinnett High School, Nyia is an involved student. While maintaining a GPA of 3.25, she has participated in student government and the Girl Scouts of America. Some weekends you can catch Nyia working at Kids Footlocker in Stonecrest Mall. But Nyia doesn’t just stop there. She was nominated for Peer Leadership and Homecoming Queen of 2010 at her high school. Earlier this year Nyia was crowned Ms. 2010 Lady-in-Waiting by the EP/CP Delta Alumnae Sorority Chapter in March. Nyia has demonstrated leadership qualities which would only be strengthened by a college education.
In her spare time, she volunteers with Hands on Atlanta, where she assisted in painting schools and Dream Pink, an organization that raises awareness about breast cancer. Having attended pre-college programs at Penn State and Barnard, Nyia looks forward to attending college in the Fall of 2011. Her goal is to major in Clinical Psychology. She has applied to University of Georgia, Temple and Howard University, with Binghamton and Penn State being her top two choices.
You can help Nyia’s dreams of going to college become a reality. Currently Nyia is a participant of the 2011 EP/CP Delta Alumnae Chapter Jabberwock Cotillion. Nyia is competing for a scholarship award. The family is currently seeking sponsorship by ads or donations. Any assistance you can give will be greatly appreciated. If you are interested you may email Nyia’s parents at nyiamgore@aol.com
Nyia has definitely demonstrated at a young age that she can be a positive force in today’s society. With your assistance Nyia can definitely further her education and become a role model by giving back to her community. If you can assist, or know of anyone who can, then feel free to share this info with them. We have to support our young people when they are striving to better themselves.
