Neil Degrasse Tyson Calls for International Treaty Banning Creation of AI Superintelligence

Good evening, my readers. As some of you know, I have in the last few years been reading to increase my scientific and technological literacy. Looking to fill the gaps in my own understanding, I have started reading books by Astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson.

I have found his works very readable, with one of my recent favorites being the book “Starry Messenger”.

This brings me to recent comments made by Professor Tyson on Artificial Intelligence. At a recent scientific lecture, Tyson calls for an international treaty to ban the creation of AI superintelligence. This sounds like the beginning of a science fiction movie, but this actually is happening.

This caught my attention. In my opinion, Tyson is one of the sharpest thinkers in our contemporary world. If he agrees with other experts in the field of computer science, then it gives us cause to pause.

Aside from this, there is also an emerging field of study on the impacts of AI. One can only hope that these early warnings will be considered before the threshold is crossed.
