100 Years of Celebrating Black History

100 year anniversary of Black History

By Marc W. Polite

Greetings, everyone. Welcome to Black History Month 2026. For those who may not know, this year marks the 100 year anniversary of Black History recognition.

Carter G. Woodson is known as the “father of Black History”. In 1926, he founded Black History Week. In 1976, this celebration officially became Black History Month. He is also the author of “The Miseducation of The Negro”- a foundational work critiquing the American educational system in how it relates to Black Americans.

Woodson also founded ASALH– Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

In light of all that is happening in this country, it is important to safeguard our history and the lessons that it teaches. In the face of erasure and intimidation, it is critical.
