Zohran Mamdani Wins NYC Mayoral Race

Mayor Elect Zohran Mamdani

By Marc W. Polite

Good morning, my readers. In a resounding rejection of politics as usual, New York City has elected Zohran Mamdani as it’s next mayor. The 34 year old democratic socialist candidate fought against an array of political and economic forces. Not to mention hostile media outlets looking for a reason to tank a progressive.

If this shows us something, it demonstrates that the tried and true tactics of red baiting don’t always hold when you are able to present a compelling reason to vote for someone. The last ditch efforts to ratchet up Islamophobia also proved ineffective.

The affordability crisis was the center piece of the Mamdani campaign, and it resulted in record voter turnout.

With this outcome, moderate Democratic candidates have been deemed ineffective to address this moment. Andrew Cuomo has been defeated- twice. New York City residents have decided to forgo “experience” and embrace a candidate with different ideas.
