Greetings, my readers. With Summer 2025 in the rear view, the focus on the New York City mayoral race will be much more intense. NYC faces some tough choices, and with the political climate that we find ourselves in, this race has implications even beyond the five boroughs.
After looking at the entire field of candidates, including some of the “independent” candidates, as editor in chief of this site, I have made my decision.
Polite On Society endorses Zohran Mamdani for New York City Mayor.
The Mamdani campaign handily defeated centrist Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo, and forced incumbent Eric Adams to run as an independent to avoid being primaried. This campaign and it’s focus on the affordability crisis in New York City has resonated with millions of New Yorkers.
In advocating for a rent freeze, this campaign taps into the key issue facing millions of residents. By actually voicing support for measures that will improve the quality of life for city residents, Mamdani has tapped into a groundswell of support. In a reality of falling standards of living for your average working class person, this campaign gives people something to vote for.
To begin pushing back on MAGA, progressive forces must reject business as usual politicians. Clearly, moderate and centrist Democratic candidates are unwilling to put up even the most rudimentary opposition to the far right rampage that the Trump Administration is carrying out.
More of the same will not cut it. Progressive minded people of various backgrounds can make our voices heard once again.
