Remembering Tennis Legend Arthur Ashe

“You’ve got to get to the stage in life where going for it is more important than winning or losing.” -Arthur Ashe

This past weekend was a great one for the game of tennis. Serena Williams won her fifth Wimbledon, and then together with Venus won the doubles title While tennis fans all observe these recent wins, there is a day that fans should also be aware of. July 10th is the birthday of tennis great Arthur Ashe.  The late athlete was a giant in the sport, and remains the only Black male tennis player to win Wimbledon.

Arthur Ashe,  born in Richmond, Virginia on July 10th, 1943 , was a great athlete and activist. He took stands against apartheid, and used his celebrity to bring attention to the injustice which occurred in South Africa during his time.

Ashe passed away in 1993 from AIDS. He contracted it via blood transfusion for heart surgery. To learn more about this great athlete and activist, go to The Official Arthur Ashe Website
